The track opens with an ethereal quality, instantly transporting listeners into a space that feels familiar and ungraspable, like stepping into a dream just before waking.
The combination of male and female vocals creates an intriguing contrast, their voices intersecting in a seamless dance that blurs the lines between reality and something more distant, more abstract.
There’s a feeling of surrender that runs through this track — a desire to let go and leave the past behind, much like the night embracing the dawn.
The urban backdrop, though faint, plays a crucial role in anchoring this emotional release, offering a sense of scale and grandeur to what otherwise might feel like a fleeting, intimate moment.
The lyrics themselves evoke a sense of longing and freedom, painting a picture of a night where nothing matters except the experience, unbound by time or consequence.
Musically, To Have and to Hold and to Break carries a heavy nostalgia for the ’80s, with lush synths and a rhythmic pulse that recalls the era’s atmospheric pop.
These retro elements only enhance the dreamlike quality of the song, as if listeners are being gently pulled deeper into a fantasy. The melodies are soft yet full of intent, slowly guiding you through the emotional landscape without ever pushing too hard.
It’s as if the song opens a door into a world you’d like to explore further, yet still remains slightly out of reach — perfectly content to let you linger in the moment a little longer.

“With ‘To have and to hold and to break’ we wanted to capture the essence of a feverish night out. A moment saturated with anticipation, where you let yourself go and tumble into a dazed and euphoric state of mind. All distorted though a filter of uncanny confusion.“
Marble Raft is the vessel of Swedish friends Olle Söderström and Gabrielle Baker. Together they conjure alternative pop-sagas with an escapist approach, building scenes of sound using an abundance of devices and instruments. Among them buzzing string machines, chiming guitars, eerie mellotron, and quite a few bells. Always with a foundation of pure melodic pop to be found underneath the hazy wall of sound.
