The crispness of the acoustic guitar tone is striking, creating a shimmering atmosphere that hangs suspended between light and shadow.
Said Sara’s voice is a familiar comfort on this track. There’s a rawness to his delivery, a vulnerability that recalls a mix of Billy Corgan of The Smashing Pumpkins and Neil Young.
Similarities in songwriting style are evident, particularly in the use of dynamic shifts to heighten emotional tension.
Around the 2:30 mark, the song takes an intriguing turn.
The initial serenity gives way to a moment of discord, a jarring shift that reflects the turmoil of loss and remembrance. This unexpected twist showcases Said Sara’s compositional vision and willingness to take creative risks.
The passionate delivery throughout the song underscores the emotional weight of the lyrics. The chord progressions, while simple, evoke a sense of yearning and introspection.
“Then There You Are” is not a flashy or flamboyant track, but rather a deeply intense musical journey.

David Benson wears many hats. He’s a drummer for longtime death metal outfit Acephalix when he’s not a special education teacher at a high school in his native San Francisco. Now Benson, under the moniker Said Sara, ventures out into eclectic but effective musical territory with his latest single “Then There You Are,” out now.
The song — recorded at The Guest Room and Yosemite Studios in San Francisco and mastered by Jesse Nichols at Oakland’s Atomic Garden West — was created entirely by Said Sara. Although his vocals and an acoustic guitar are the primary instruments heard, piano, bodhran and electronics flesh out “Then There You Are” to near perfection.
