The Dracula Parrot is one of those birds you’d expect to find on the shoulder of a pirate.
You can find this incredible bird only in the rainforests and mountains of New Guinea. Its bright scarlet plumage, like the silk lining of a cloak, contrasts beautifully with the black and dark gray color of the chest, back, and tail.
The Dracula Parrot Is Gothic As Hell
This is a large, bird, nearly half a meter long from beak to tail, and weighs nearly a pound. It feeds almost exclusively on figs, and researchers suspect this is why it has a strange semi-bald head.
Just like vultures that have a featherless head to adapt to feeding on animal carcasses, this gothic bird is thought to have undergone the same evolution in response to its sticky fruit diet. The lack of feathers around its beak and eyes allows him not to look disheveled when eating.

Females and males look quite similar. The only difference between them is that males have red spots behind their ears.
The bird doesn’t just look sinister: its sound has been described as a “harsh and scratchy growl”.
This parrot would have been perfect on Count Vlad’s shoulder but who knows…maybe the famous vampire has decided to transform himself into a parrot instead of the usual bat this time.
This is the only member of the genus Psittrichas, and also the only member of the subfamily Psittrichasinae. Therefore a very unique animal. Unfortunately, it has been classified as a vulnerable species on the IUCN list.
One of the main reasons is hunting: there are those who try to capture these parrots for their feathers, which are paid dearly by collectors. Approximately 20,000 to 50,000 specimens exist in nature.
