From the opening track, If I Could Do It All Over Again, there’s an undeniable ’80s undertone in the melody, while Sconza’s intimate vocal delivery draws the listener into a world that feels intriguing and unique.
Broken Glass stands out with melodies that carry echoes of The Beatles, yet the song embraces a psychedelic haze that gives it a dreamlike character.
There’s an ethereal quality at play, making it one of the album’s most special moments.
Lonely Monica follows with an almost hypnotic progression—its structure is unpredictable in the best way, pulling the listener into a trance-like state. It’s a testament to Sconza’s ability to craft melodies that challenge expectations while remaining deeply engaging.
With Pretty Picture, a piano-driven riff falls into place like a sudden downpour, with the rhythm and lyrics mirroring its unpredictable yet immersive feel. Then comes Usually, where a tremolo-laden guitar line conjures the ghostly mood of Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang, adding a haunting, cinematic edge to the album’s sonic palette.
The album closes with Timeless, a track that embodies the balance of nostalgia and modernity Sconza perfects throughout Standards. It carries vintage textures while concealing something fresh beneath its surface, a fitting end to a record that refuses to be boxed into a single era or style.
Sconza blends classic and contemporary influences, nodding to Bowie, McCartney, Beck and psychedelic rock without losing his unique identity. Standards is a fascinating journey through sound and emotion, solidifying his place as an artist with a voice entirely his own.
