Good Day Noir Family,
our “E.A.Poets Approved/Bands We Like” section is dedicated to Marble Raft. I discovered this Duo while shuffling songs on Spotify and I liked the nostalgic vibes of their music.
The sound of this duo immediately intrigued me.
As soon as I hit the play button the world in front of my eyes turned yellow and grainy like those movies shot in Super 8.
This music made me open a drawer and made me find a lot of Polaroids. It is as if the sound of Marble Raft helped me to find forgotten memories.
Their sound is very interesting because they were able to find an enviable balance between past and future and therefore their music manages to be unique and original.
I really liked how the two voices blend together and the ethereal and nostalgic melodies.
The production is excellent and the mix leaves the right space for each sound element and their songs breathe well.
A nice discovery that I can recommend to everyone.
Geography A is Marble Raft’s Album Out Now!
Ethereal and Unique!
Marble Raft is the vessel of Swedish friends Olle Söderström and Gabrielle Baker. Together they conjure alternative pop-sagas with an escapist approach, building scenes of sound using an abundance of devices and instruments. Among them buzzing string machines, chiming guitars, eerie mellotron, and quite a few bells. Always with a foundation of pure melodic pop to be found underneath the hazy wall of sound.
Marble Raft was crafted a few years ago out of the duos mutual love for the ethereal and the naive. Instead of focusing on the external world they turn their gaze inwards, building stories of sound. The inspiration comes from oddities such as old maps, stories of exploration and exotic flowers. Musical inspiration comes from bands such as Alvvays, The Magnetic Fields, Cocteau Twins, and Chairlift. Parallel with Marble Raft, Gabrielle is the lead singer and songwriter in Gothenburg-based shoegaze band IBEN and Olle has previously been a member and songwriter of Stockholm-based pop bands Nanook Of The North and Pineforest Crunch.
