Good Day Noir Family,
our “E.A.Poets Approved/Bands We Like” section is dedicated to Karl Bertrand. I discovered this Artist while shuffling songs on Spotify and I was intrigued by his music.
The musical universe created by this artist struck me from the very first seconds.
A compositional style that has managed to bring together many different genres into a coherent and innovative musical product.
If I had to find a common thread to the Traps of Love album I would say that it is nostalgia, the melodies of these songs can speak directly to the heart and soul of the listener.
On a musical level, I liked this blend of folk and modern grooves that manage to bring this music into a limbo of its own.
Surely Karl Bertrand has a great compositional experience behind him and you can feel it as all his songs are well structured and the chord progression is never predictable and banal.
An excellent discovery that I recommend to everyone.
Traps of Love is Karl Bertrand’s Album Out Now!
Innovative and Nostalgic!
Karl Bertrand was a founding member, guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and manager for Saratoga Springs, NY jam rock band, Let’s Be Leonard, from 2014 to 2022. During that time, he performed on stages all across the country as the band toured from coast to coast in their eclectic pink and blue school bus. They released music that was featured in Relix Magazine and their success culminated in festival appearances at Adiriondack Inde- pendence Music Festival in New York, Mile of Music in Appleton, Wisconsin, and High Sierra Music Festival in California.
As the pandemic changed lives, Leonard decided they could no longer live the nomadic lifestyle and the members of the group changed their ways, eventually leading to the bands dissolution in early 2022.
As a result, Bertrand began to take his songwriting practice to the studio in more serious endeavors. He also picked up a newfound practice in ambient music to curb a growing feeling of personal anxiety. These events eventually led to him recording and releasing a plethora of music on his own; six records from 2019 to 2021 (three songwriter/producer albums and three ambient records). He writes, records, produces, mixes, and masters all of his records on his own.
In addition to his musical craft, the pandemic has also spurred and uptick in his creative writing output. His attention has been split between both music and writing. He is currently looking for a home for his debut novel ‘Diaries of the Great American Draft’ and finishing a handful of short stories.
