Edgar Allan Poets – Noir Rock Band | Interview with Laurence Warner
Interview with Laurence Warner

Good Day Noir Family,
welcome to Edgar Allan Poets indie music corner. A space dedicated to the best new artists and bands we find around the web. Today we are going to ask some questions to Laurence Warner about his musical vision, project and his single (Babyyy) I Want to Know U.

1) Tell us more about yourself. Why did you decide to create your own music?

I’m Laurence Warner and I’m a Singer-Songwriter-Rapper.‍ I used to run home from school blasting noughties rap in my iPod Classic through Eastleigh backstreets to my Mum’s piano, to write songs I just couldn’t find a voice for. Until a decade later I came home for the pandemic.

Now I create music, cos I want to know u, and u to know me.

2) What are the bands or artists that inspire you?

Young brits like Sam Fender, Ren, Slowthai show you can start in a smalltown here and grow a global audience.
Creative visionaries like Bo Burnham, Heath McNease, Marc Rebillet inspire me to bring levity to seriously good art.
And Little Simz lets me know I can be major without the label.

3) You have a new single “(Babyyy) I Want to Know U” out now, can you tell us more about the recording process, and what inspired you to write this song?

I wrote this on my piano back in 2017, but only since musical wizard Matthew Large became my Producer was I able to get the grungy sound these gritty lyrics deserve.

4) About those lyrics, what is your favorite line and why?

I’ve stripped away my trademark humour to keep the song raw, except to lean into that term of endearment pop-music just hasn’t been able to resist since The Ronnettes made it sound soo good back when Hitch was making movies! So I’d say the “Be my Baby (be my little babyyy)” reference.

5) Your artistic vision has evolved slowly and previously you had presented yourself with different names and sounds. What constantly drives you to change? What is the focus of your inspiration?

Thanks for remembering, Chris! Folks may recall my rapper alter-ego MC Beastly – a comic exaggeration of that smalltown teenager – was a viral hit, and I paired it with Cerulean pop ballads for two innovative divided concept-albums for my local audience: garnering Southern Daily Echo & BBC Radio spots, and Railway Inn & Silverlake Stadium shows.

Now I’m a single artist, on a mission to connect – independently of Big Music/Social – with everyone who loves the English language, like the Poe(try) fans you attract!

6) What do you think about the music business today and the quality of music in general nowadays?

With free streaming/sync, indie artists are in the Pits, but the Pendulum can swing back our way if we’re savvy enough to collaborate on our own multimedia projects.

7) Tell us a quote you would like to be remembered for by the world?

To adapt the wordsmith we both love: believe only half of what you see about me but everything you hear me sing.

Thanks, Laurence for letting us know a little more about you and your personality. Thanks also for these references to Poe which we obviously like a lot 🙂

Singer-Songwriter-Rapper. “School didn’t push me creatively, so I blasted noughties rap & indie albums on my iPod Classic, through Eastleigh backstreets to my Mum’s piano, to write songs I couldn’t find a voice for. A decade later I came home from the pandemic and found two. Now I’m a single artist, on a mission to connect independently of Big Music/Social with everyone who loves the English language. Imma sing a song, write a rap. Sing a song, write a rap. Uhh..
