Opening with the eerie and intriguing “The Simulation,” the track captures a mood that evokes a slight sense of danger, while its melodies remind you of classic Led Zeppelin in their heyday.

The mood takes a sharp turn on “Last Quarter,” which brings a bright, rhythmic energy to the forefront. The vocals are so intimate, they almost feel like the artist is in the room with you.

On “Gold,” Hoy and his bandmates get experimental. A shifting panpot effect takes listeners to a completely different space, making it feel like the song transcends time and space itself.

The theatrical quality of the vocals in this track is something to be noticed, as it builds toward an explosive chorus where the rock vibes truly take off. It’s a thrilling ride that teases the mind and demands attention.

Perhaps one of the most infectious tracks on Hit Music is “The Wheel.” Its groove is impossible to ignore. The rhythm grabs hold of you from the first beat, making it nearly impossible to resist tapping your foot along to the beat.

“Luck Vs Fate” is another standout, kicking off with an unforgettable guitar riff that feels entirely unique. The song then blossoms into something extraordinary, as brass instruments blend into the mix, creating a hybrid of sound that channels a mix of The Beatles and David Bowie.

The song “I Have Frustration” stands out with its catchy, repetitive riff, which feels almost sly in its subtle brilliance. It’s irreverent, playful, and undeniably fun, making it a standout track in the album’s lineup.

“Stay Fun!” brings the energy back to a hard rock vibe, with its driving rhythm that may remind some listeners of Queens of the Stone Age’s “No One Knows.” The track feels grounded in something raw, but still polished enough to make it accessible to listeners of all walks of life.

Closing the album is the title track, “Hit Music.” The tremolo-laden guitar serves as a nostalgic backdrop to a truly captivating finish. It feels vintage but still incredibly fresh, giving the album a perfect conclusion.

In Hit Music, Greg Hoy and The Boys prove that they’re not just another psychedelic band—they’re innovators who know how to combine retro influences with their unique flair.

Dynamic!

Greg Hoy’s album Hit Music is a story of resilience and reinvention. After being diagnosed with spinal arthritis and cervical radiculopathy, which affected his ability to play guitar, Hoy shifted his focus to drums. Over six months, he crafted 30 song ideas, embracing a raw, live-recording approach without software tricks. The album features a mix of energetic rock and unexpected horn arrangements, with contributions from German trumpeter Kelly O’Donohue and saxophonist Ben Opie. Inspired by a sign outside a steakhouse, Hit Music aims to feel like a greatest hits record. Hoy, who played most instruments himself, will hit the road in 2025 for a series of intimate shows.
