Introduced by Obsidian: Music PR & Media, this album is an excellent recommendation for anyone craving the raw energy and introspection that defines great rock music.

The opening track, “Things That Walked,” sets the tone with a strong rock vibe that immediately brings to mind the influence of bands like Soundgarden.

The lead vocalist’s delivery has an edge reminiscent of Chris Cornell, giving the song a gritty yet soulful quality. This track establishes the band’s ability to tap into the essence of 90s rock while still sounding current.

“Shaking Wall” follows with a driving guitar riff that channels the spirit of pure rock, offering a straightforward, no-frills tune that’s impossible not to get into. It’s a track that exemplifies the band’s tight musicianship and knack for crafting memorable riffs.

“Wild Ones Went Away” stands out as a surprising blend of Pearl Jam’s intensity and R.E.M.’s melodic sensibility. This track shows the band’s versatility.

The psychedelic “Man-of-War Mast (Isle of None 1970)” is another highlight, with its intricate structure and an almost primal energy that feels ancient and avant-garde.

“Another Sun Shines Underground” showcases the band’s ability to craft beautiful ballads without falling into predictability in fact around minute 3.10 the song switches towards a great and epic finale.

The arpeggiated guitar and unique chord progressions have a medieval tinge, adding sophistication to the song. It’s a quieter moment on the album, but no less powerful, proving that Flashlight Faces can deliver on all fronts.

Fool’s Field is a solid and intense album that demands attention and rewards repeated listens, making it a must for rock enthusiasts.

Solid!

Atlanta-based Flashlight Faces is how singer-songwriter Paul Buchholz blends his love of 70’s AOR from across the pond with a fascination with gothic literature and weird tales. These four veteran musicians came together to create a riffy, rocking soundtrack for Bucholz’ large and haunting collection of songs. Buchholz hooked up with Joe Binns (Elf Power, Allgood, Springwild) during the pandemic, and the two emailed the audio files back and forth that would eventually become their first record, ‘Off on the Moons’, released in March 2023, with Englishman John Ballam joining on bass.

Flashlight Faces has since become a steady presence in the metro Atlanta rock scene, with organist Ryan Dawe joining in the summer of 2023. Their new LP ‘Fool’s Field,’ was recorded in April 2024 at Flossy Monk Studio and released in July. Featuring eight new vintage rock songs, the album captures the quartet at the height of their energy.
