The album opens with “April 3, 1974,” a track that entertains you with its intricate rhythmic structure and infectious guitar riff. Detailed and refined it reminded me of musical projects like Dave Matthews Band.
“Carolina’s Better” is an uplifting track with a soaring melody and a driving rhythm. The song’s progression is reminiscent of classics like “Wild Thing,” adding a touch of nostalgia to the mix.
“Look Out Loretta” takes a turn towards Americana, showcasing Sanford:’s ability to blend genres.
“Will They X Make It Good” is a standout track that blends folk and some traditional Irish influences in the melody of the chorus in my opinion.
“Cotton Hill Memorial Barbecue” highlights Sanford:’s jazz sensibilities, with a complex arrangement that nods to the avant-garde. The song’s instrumental performance shows Sanford:’s musical versatility.
“The Link” takes a darker turn, the song’s haunting guitar arpeggio adds intrigue with that sinister and medieval vibe that’s mysterious and charming.
Throughout the album, Sanford:’s songwriting shines through. Each song is meticulously crafted, with attention to detail and a clear sense of purpose.
With its rich variety of musical influences and Sanford:’s refined songwriting, the album is a must-have for any fan of Americana, folk,

Sanford: is the brainchild of Brooklyn-based and South Carolina-born musician Jay Sanford. He does all of the writing, arranging, performing (minus horns), and production for his recorded music, including previous original releases: “Figured I’d Ask Anyway” (featured in “Gems on VHS” and “This Week in Americana” spotify playlists) and “Anymore,” both from his first album The View Changes. His album, Extinguished Dreams, builds on previous influences of Americana, soul, and rock, and dives further into the pool, pulling from more of his wide range of musical influences.
