Because it is increasingly difficult to be a working musician and live in the United States, Joel Daniel knew he had to come up with a solution that would help recording projects be more accessible. In 2019, he proposed a grant program, the Davis Independent Music Initiative (“DIMI”) to his hometown of Davis, California.
With it’s approval, the city now uses funds allocated to the arts to support music-related projects – the principal annual grant goes to a musician or band so that they can produce a new musical work. In addition to Texnia, DIMI and the City of Davis have since funded two additional records and countless smaller projects, proving its success.
