Disengaged b/w Slipping is Delta of Venus’ Single Out Now

Good Day Noir Family,
Delta of Venus’ latest single, Disengaged b/w Slipping, is a finely crafted two-track journey that takes listeners through distinct sonic territories while staying true to the band’s signature atmospheric flair.

Disengaged b/w Slipping is Delta of Venus’ Single Out Now

The first track, “Disengaged,” begins with a crisp, crystalline guitar that feels almost ethereal, setting a calm yet inviting tone.

The rhythm quickly takes hold, steady and contagious, creating an instant connection. Lead singer’s voice is airy, yet full of emotion, guiding the listener through a hypnotic melody.

There’s a nostalgic air to the performance as if the song exists somewhere between memory and fantasy.

The dreamy atmosphere is bolstered by lush pads that open up the mix, drawing you into vast, open spaces—taking the track to a place where time and gravity seem to fade away.

There’s an undeniable sense of release here, a moment where the weight of the world can momentarily disappear, and the voice itself seems to glide effortlessly, reminding me at times of Florence Welch’s vocal delivery—breezy yet full of power.

The track is not heavy-handed, yet it’s easy to get lost in its tranquil, almost pastoral vibe. It’s the kind of music that fills your mind with visuals, evoking the feeling of standing alone in a quiet field, letting the wind wash over you.

The second track, Slipping, contrasts with its predecessor, carrying a more urgent, driving energy. The rhythm picks up speed, propelled by a pulsating drumbeat and a guitar riff that’s both urgent and enticing.

There’s a raw edge to the melody that recalls the alternative grunge-pop of bands like The Smashing Pumpkins. It feels darker, more charged, yet still maintains that captivating undercurrent of introspection.

The track steadily builds, and while its mood is slightly more restless, it never loses the band’s ability to create a sense of internal tension and release.

Both songs on this single show Delta of Venus’ ability to play with dynamic shifts, using instrumentation to mirror the emotional weight of their lyrics.

Ethereal!

Delta of Venus began in a basement practice room in 1993 when three friends decided to start a band, but with one caveat- they would choose instruments they couldn’t play.
Dawn Estabrooks hadn’t picked up a guitar in five years, and wasn’t much a player at that time. Mat Tarbox had been cutting teeth in the Mystic, Ct indie scene as a vocalist for years, but was now going to play bass guitar. Ellery Twining walked out from behind his drum set, where he sat with local group 17 Relics for years, he would pick up the guitar as well.
The concept was we wouldn’t be able to sound like anyone else because we could not.

Mat taught Ellery how to program Mat’s HR-16 Alesis drum machine, and they began writing songs. In 1993 and 1994 they released two EPs on cassette only, and began to build a local live audience. During their NYE performance 31 December 1994, local drummer Shawn Fake jumped up on stage and played live drums over their drum machine programs for their final song of the set. He has been the drummer the entire run of the band. And things became more involved.

In 1996, a seven inch single recorded at Waterworks Studio in NYC,was released, and they began to ply their trade in the indie rock micro corridor between NYC and Providence RI. In1997, the band wrote and recorded a full- length nine song album “Make Yrself Xtra Special” at one of the first digital demo rooms in Mystic.

After the full length album failed to gain additional traction, “real” world concerns ended the band in Autumn 1997.
Fast forward to 2022. Ellery releases his first solo album “REVENGE”, a nine song collection where he played all of the instruments (except bass guitar). In 2023, Ellery releases his follow up “RESULTS”. While composing songs for a third record, Ellery found himself in a bit of a rut, and reaches out to Shawn, Dawn, and Mat about writing a new Delta of Venus record. Ellery was hoping for a creative spark, and the band delivered.

Disengaged b/w Slipping is the first recorded material from the reformed band. Plying their own vision of shoegaze and indie pop, the songs also benefit from the unique song writing process Ellery has refined during the solo work. They have eschewed the traditional format of verse / chorus / verse with something more in tune with their sonic palette. There are no verses, there are no “choruses” there are no “solos”. Instead, musical movements revolve around each other, creating an architecture that adds definition to the indeterminate description of shoegaze.

Original member Dawn had to drop out of the project due to travel concerns after the group of Mat, Shawn, and Ellery had tracked the two songs at Dirt Floor Recording and Production in February 2024. In an incredible turn of events, new vocalist Issy found a job at Mystic Disc, the venerable record store in the heart of town, where Ellery has worked for the past two decades. During a shift together in June 2024, Ellery innocently asked Issy if “she could sing?”
Nine weeks later, Issy entered Dirt Floor and recorded all of the vocals for both songs on the single in three hours. Eric, at The Floor, stated about her performance during the vocal session- “A Gem.”
