Cuzco is Jackal Twins’ Album Out Now

Good Day Noir Family,
Harbor Delirium opens Cuzco with an eerie atmosphere, as if you’ve been dropped into a John Carpenter film. The track starts with the sound of raindrops, quickly enveloping you in a sense of unease.

The fog lifts, and the guitars begin to growl intermittently, building into a wild, unrestrained frenzy.

It’s clear right away that Jackal Twins isn’t interested in conventional structures—they thrive on unpredictability, delivering a sense of controlled chaos that grips you.

One Eyed Wolf continues this exploration of sonic territory, further highlighting the band’s commitment to experimentation. The technical skill on display is extraordinary, with sharp, breath-stealing changes in tempo and rhythm that keep you on edge.

The vocals are raw and primal, evoking a sense of urgency and tension, never allowing you to guess what will come next. Jackal Twins’ approach to song construction is fearless, with every moment feeling like a new challenge.

Charcoal Lions offers a surprising twist. The track starts with a melody that seems out of place compared to the previous intensity, almost serene in its beginning. But as the song progresses, you feel the underlying tension build, as if the calm before the storm.

The calm doesn’t last long, and soon the familiar ferocity takes over, revealing that the band’s momentary calmness is merely a setup for something wilder.

Sweet Huntress (Part I) reminds me of Naked City, the avant-garde metal band known for blending a range of genres in unexpected ways. Jackal Twins shows their own brand of experimentation here, mixing metal with elements and other influences in a unique, almost indescribable style.

In Never Tamed, the band toys with pop structures, but just for a moment. They quickly return to their unhinged style, as the track culminates in a wild finish that feels like the band never fully commits to being anything other than unpredictable.

Spoken to Time is a track you’ll want to revisit multiple times. Its intricacies—the subtle pauses, shifts in rhythm, and careful layering of sound—feel close to a work of genius. The track challenges traditional songwriting, offering a listening experience that’s as much about the space between the notes as the notes themselves. I was instantly hooked, eager to explore every detail.

Noose Shaped Galaxy / Celestial Eyes brings another sonic journey that leaves you astounded. The song’s ability to balance all its shifting elements into a cohesive whole speaks to the band’s remarkable artistic control. The track is a beautiful paradox: intense yet delicate, overwhelming yet precise. It’s a moment of musical excellence that demands to be heard.

The album closes with Barn Owl, a fierce track that encapsulates the spirit of the album. It’s aggressive and unapologetic, the perfect way to end such an audacious collection of songs. The prolonged silence in the outro adds a sense of finality, only to reawaken unexpectedly before closing out entirely. It’s a bold move, reflective of the album’s wild nature.

Jackal Twins has created something exceptional with Cuzco. Fans of avant-garde metal and experimental music will find a lot to love here, and for those looking to hear something truly unique, this album is a must-listen.

Unpredictable!

Jackal Twins emerged in 2017 when longtime friends Ben Trussell (drums/vocals) and Mike Palumbo (guitar/vocals) sought an outlet for their aggressive musical ideas. Their undeniable chemistry led to a flood of songwriting, and by 2019, bassist Dante Lamusta joined, solidifying their dynamic sound.

Their debut full-length LP, engineered by Kurt Ballou (Converge) at GodCity Studios and mastered by Carl Saff, is out now, following the debut single “Charcoal Lions” (January 10, 2025) and three more singles leading up to the album. Described by Ballou as an “incredible record,” the album’s creation was a test of perseverance—self-funded, self-recorded vocals in makeshift home studios, and an extensive mixing and mastering process to achieve their uncompromising vision.

Blending punk, metalcore, post-rock, noise rock, jazz, and chaotic hardcore, Jackal Twins craft “psychedelic noisy tunes for the hopeless romantic.” Their sound shifts from haunting melodies to guttural growls, desperate screams, and intricate instrumentation. The band sees their debut as a full-album experience rather than a collection of songs, aiming to deliver an immersive and emotionally intense musical journey.
