The role of reporter Daniel Malloy was originally supposed to be River Phoenix, but the actor died a few weeks before filming began. This led Christian Slater, the actor who replaced him, to donate all of his salary to the charities preferred by his deceased colleague. In the credits, there is also a dedication to Phoenix.

Brad Pitt was not very happy with his role in Interview with the Vampire: he could not tolerate contact lenses and he did not feel comfortable in the costumes used for the shoot. As the actor himself told a few years ago in an interview granted to Entertainment Weekly, Pitt wanted to leave filming and asked producer David Geffen if it was possible. These are the words of the actor:
I told him, “David, I can’t go on. When would it cost me to leave? “ And he, very calmly, replied: “40 million dollars”.
At that point I recovered, I strengthened myself and I realized that I must necessarily go forward.
As in the case of Malloy, other actors were consulted for the role of the evil vampire Lestat before giving the part to Tom Cruise.
Johnny Depp and Tom Hanks turned down the role, as did Jeremy Irons, the production’s first choice. It seems that the actor did not want to undergo hours and hours of makeup to become a vampire, as the same fate had befallen him for The House of the Spirits.
