From the opening track, “Tearing You Apart,” the band immediately reveals their musical expertise, capturing a polished, organic sound that highlights crystal-clear guitar strumming and intricate arrangements.

It’s a song that feels masterfully crafted, with each musician bringing depth and subtle detail to the track’s unfolding energy.

One track that stands out is “Echo in the Dark,” which immerses the listener in a nostalgia, that created winter scenarios before my eyes. The melody carries a bittersweet quality that transports you, as if to a quiet, isolated beach in the off-season.

“Figure You Out” offers a nod to the greats—its progression recalls a touch of Beatles-era sensibility, combining introspective lyrics with an approachable, melodic warmth.

Another gem on the album, “Seasons,” feels fresh and airy, almost like a cool morning breeze, embodying a lively yet relaxed tone that adds a different shade to the album’s folk palette.

“Warm Enough” is perhaps the most rhythm-driven track, maintaining an urgency that persists from the first to the last beat. This song highlights the synergy within the band as they move seamlessly together, like a well-tuned train speeding down the track.

And then there’s “Ember,” notable for its mesmerizing vocal harmonies that recall the likes of Grant Lee Buffalo, blending warmth and intensity that stay with you after the song ends.

The album closes with “Wake the Dead,” a fittingly bold conclusion that encapsulates the refined folk-rock spirit of Rubatosis.

The band has crafted an album that’s not only refined in its melodies and production but also deeply resonant in its expression. It’s a musical offering that showcases Chris Fox & the Beasts as artists poised to make a significant impact in the industry.

Refined!

Chris Fox & the Beasts are an indie folk rock band from the Catskills of New York. Influenced by the great songwriters of yore (not that yore, let’s say the 70s) and some modern ones like Conor Oberst and Devendra Banhart, they try to write songs not pinned to any time and place. With Fox at the center, he asks his musical friends to provide the missing pieces when they’re around; this time it’s yielded a record called Rubatosis.
