Icarus is Powers of the Monk’s Single Out Now
Good Day Noir Family,
With Icarus, Powers of the Monk invites listeners into a world rich with atmosphere and intrigue.
Icarus is Powers of the Monk’s Single Out Now
Even if the song is inspired by Greek mythology it begins with an enigmatic intro that conjures an almost swampy, Louisiana-like mystique, pulling listeners into what feels like a hazy, southern night where secrets and stories emerge.
There’s a distinct gypsy flair to the instrumentation that hints at an introspective journey, as though each note is urging you to explore not just landscapes, but inner depths.
The rhythmic folk foundation of Icarus is layered with touches of psychedelia that give it an unmistakably unique character. The vocals are soft yet tinged with an underlying sense of foreboding, a contrast that adds an intriguing edge.
This is complemented by expertly arranged guitar and ambient elements that evoke spaciousness, creating an almost cinematic experience.
At times, the melody calls to mind a medieval folk tradition, adding another layer to this multifaceted track. Powers of the Monk has crafted a single that feels both familiar and hauntingly mysterious, a rare blend that keeps you hooked from beginning to end.

Powers of the Monk, was founded in 2006 by David s. Monk and CasSondra Powers. The band is from Detroit, Michigan USA. In 2006 POM released “Killing Time”, a 12 song CD, that showed the band was more ‘electronic rock’ back then. In 2008 they recorded a second CD called “Riding With Strangers”, but did not release it. In 2010 POM took a hiatus and returned in 2020 with new material that showed the band in a more “indie pop” to “indie folk” mood. POM released a demo version of “Firefly” and a 3 song EP called “Freight Train” in 2022. In 2023 the band started a relationship with producer Dani Macchi, founding member of Italian band, Belladonna. Dani produced a re-recorded version of “Firefly”, released in November of 2023. In 2024, POM and Dani Macchi wrote the song, “Switchin’ Rails”, that was released in February 2024. The third single called Puffy Head (with bird legs), was released in May 2024.
