This album blends a deep sense of nostalgia with a modern twist, bringing the raw energy of that decade into the present.
Opening with “Numb,” the record immediately pulls you into a slightly paranoid, intense vibe. The distorted, megaphonic vocals add tension, while the aggressive guitars take center stage, reminiscent of classic Butch Vig production techniques.
Layering multiple guitar tracks, EQ’d and panned across the spectrum, creates a powerful and immersive wall of sound.
“Magic Hour” oozes grunge energy, with the drums hammering away as if Dave Grohl himself were behind the kit. The rhythmic drive and relentless guitar work propel the track forward with all the grit you’d expect from a ’90s-inspired piece.
“The Sea Is A Wishing Well” slows things down with a more ethereal quality, offering a glimpse of hope through its soft, almost dreamlike layers. It’s one of those tracks that feels like floating in a fragile moment, a sharp contrast to the heavier moments on the album.
“Undertow” stands out with its distant, almost post-apocalyptic guitar tones, giving the track a haunting atmosphere. This is followed by “The Day I Learned Your Name,” a more refined track that showcases Hulegaard’s diverse musical influences while maintaining a cohesive, grounded rock foundation.
“Miranda Lawson” caught my attention with its melody that hints at Alice in Chains, combining dark undertones with a melodic core. It’s one of the highlights, merging nostalgia with fresh energy.
“Polymorphic Light Eruption” is an intense sonic avalanche. It feels like a chaotic drone flying over a Mad Max-style landscape—epic and charged with momentum.
The next track, “Planned Obsolescence,” offers subtle nods to Placebo, blending alt-rock grit with refined melodic craftsmanship.
The album closes with “Blush,” a beautifully executed track. The guitar solo here is a true standout, with every note expressing raw emotion.
It’s an impressive closer to an album that is solid in every tune and masterfully balances the past and present.

“When I first started writing songs back in the mid 90s, it was sort of in protest to the changing landscape of post-Nirvana alternative rock,” said Dave Hulegaard. “Most of my favorite bands had either broken up or had drastically changed their sound and I was sad about it. With the millennium on the horizon, I wasn’t ready to leave the 90s behind and Twelve Days in June was my way of keeping them alive. I guess that’s still true today.”
Turning back the clock & kicking down the door to the golden age of 90s alternative, Twelve Days in June is the studio project of Schenectady, New York’s Dave Hulegaard. Self-described as a “throwback” artist, Dave is a spiritual successor to the wide array of 90s bands who shaped his youth, crafting melodic rock songs with introspective lyrics examining the often-unbalanced human experience.
